How Laser Engraving Works (And Why the Design Takes Longer Than the Laser)

Most people picture laser engraving as the interesting part — a beam of light burning an image into wood, plastic, cork or glass in real time. It's satisfying to watch, but it's actually the shortest step in the process.

It starts with an idea, not a machine
Every piece begins with a concept from the client — a design they already have in mind, an occasion they're marking, or just a general feel they're going for. From there, we turn that concept into an actual design: choosing the artwork, laying out the text, and sizing everything to fit the piece it'll live on, whether that's a lazy susan, a bookmark, or something else entirely.
The proof comes before anything touches the laser
Once the design is ready, we send over a proof — a preview of exactly how the finished piece will look — before any material goes near the machine. This is the step that saves everyone from surprises. Clients can ask for adjustments, catch a typo, or simply confirm it's right, all before the wood is committed.
Then, and only then, the laser
With the proof approved, the piece goes under the laser, which traces the design directly into the material's grain — no ink, no stamps. Getting the contrast just right sometimes takes multiple passes over the same lines, which adds to the time the piece spends in the machine. Even so, the laser step is usually the fastest part of the whole process. The design and proofing stage is where most of the actual time goes.
