Laser Engraving vs. UV Printing vs. Sublimation: What's the Difference?

If you've shopped for a personalized gift lately, you've probably seen all three of these terms thrown around like they mean the same thing: laser engraved, UV printed, sublimated. They don't. Each one does something different to the material, and that difference is exactly why some personalized gifts hold up for decades, and others start looking rough after a few months in a dishwasher or a sunny windowsill.
Here's the honest breakdown, including where the other two methods genuinely make sense.

Laser engraving: it changes the material itself
A laser engraver removes or alters the surface of the actual material — burning into wood grain, etching glass, or vaporizing a layer of anodized coating on metal. Nothing is added on top. The design becomes part of the object, the same way a carving is part of a piece of furniture. That's why it doesn't peel, fade, scratch off, or wash away — there's nothing sitting on the surface to lose. The tradeoff is that most engraving is single-tone (the color of the burned or etched material itself), so it isn't the way to go for a full-color photograph.
UV printing: ink cured instantly on top of the surface
UV printing sprays full-color ink directly onto a surface and cures it almost instantly with UV light. It's how you get vibrant, photo-quality graphics on things like acrylic, metal, or plastic, and it works on a wider range of shapes and materials than engraving does. The catch is that the ink sits on top of the material rather than becoming part of it, so like any coating, it can eventually scratch, chip, or fade with heavy wear or direct sun exposure — how much depends a lot on the specific ink and material combination.
Sublimation: dye that bonds into a coating, not the item itself
Sublimation uses heat to turn dye into a gas that bonds into a special polymer coating on the item — think of the coated tumblers and mugs you see with vivid, wraparound photo designs. Because the dye becomes part of that coating rather than just sitting on top, it holds up better than basic printing. But it only works on items manufactured with that polymer coating, which is why you won't see sublimation used on real wood, natural slate, or bare metal — those materials don't have anything for the dye to bond to.
Why we build around laser engraving
We chose laser engraving because most of what we make is meant to be kept — a closing gift that sits on a client's counter for years, a bookmark that gets carried around and dropped, a keepsake meant to last.
Permanence matters more to us than full color. That said, we're not going to pretend laser engraving is the right call for every project. If a client needs a bold, full-color photo or logo reproduction, UV printing or sublimation genuinely does that better than we can — and we'd rather tell you that upfront than force every gift through one process.
